Fresh, crusty homemade bread without ever turning on the oven
Who knew you could bake real bread using a slow cooker? This Crockpot Bread is soft on the inside, lightly crusty on the outside, and incredibly easy to make. Perfect for beginners, small kitchens, or hot days when you want fresh bread without heating up the house.
INGREDIENTS
1½ cups warm water (about 110°F / 45°C – warm, not hot)
1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
Optional toppings: fresh or dried herbs (rosemary, thyme), seeds, or grated cheese
INSTRUCTIONS
ACTIVATE THE YEAST
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. This step ensures the yeast is active and will give you a good rise.
MAKE THE DOUGH
Add olive oil, flour, and salt to the bowl. Stir with a spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms and all the flour is incorporated.
KNEAD
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes until the dough becomes smooth, soft, and elastic. It should spring back slightly when pressed.
FIRST RISE
Place the dough back into the bowl, lightly greased with oil. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
SHAPE & COOK
Gently punch down the dough and shape it into a round or oval loaf. Place it into a greased or parchment-lined slow cooker. Sprinkle with herbs, seeds, or cheese if desired.
SLOW COOK
Cover with the lid and cook on HIGH for 2–3 hours, until the bread is set, lightly golden, and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
COOL & SERVE
Carefully lift the bread out and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing. This helps the crumb set properly.
TIPS FOR THE BEST CROCKPOT BREAD
Line the slow cooker with parchment paper for easy removal
The top won’t brown much — for extra crust, place under the broiler for 2–3 minutes after cooking
Avoid lifting the lid too often to keep heat and steam inside
This bread is perfect with butter, soups, stews, or sliced for sandwiches
